Ode to Autumn

"Autumn," poem by Helen Keller, 27 October 1893.
(Alexander Graham Bell Family Papers)

This poem was written by thirteen-year-old Helen Keller (1880-1968) who, only six years before, was "a wild little creature" who lived in the chilling emptiness and confusion of having been deaf and blind since she was nineteen months old. In early 1887, Keller's father brought her to the attention of Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922), the inventor of the telephone and a teacher and advocate of the deaf. Bell recommended Keller to the Perkins Institute, stating that she was certainly capable of being taught. There she began a lifelong association with teacher Annie Sullivan (1866-1936), who, in less than three weeks, used finger spelling to communicate with Keller by manually pressing the alphabet onto the child's palm. This enabled Keller to make her famous breakthrough in understanding--realizing the simple but profound notion that people and things had names. Keller called this awakening her "soul's birthday," and attributed its occurrence to Bell, whom she later described as "the door through which I should pass from darkness into light."

Significantly, it was also Bell who encouraged Keller to attend a regular school, thus permitting her eventually to graduate cum laude from Radcliffe College in 1904. All her life she remained a grateful, close friend of Bell, visiting his home and family, and in this case, dedicating this intensely descriptive poem to her kind and loving mentor. Bell also had taken early note of Keller's "marvelous knowledge of language" and believed she had a future in literature. Many called Keller's achievements a miracle, but Bell, ever the scientist, insisted that Sullivan's success with the child was not supernatural but rather a brilliantly successful experiment.

CARDIGANS!!! Yay!

So I put this pic in because I am a cardigan queen. I don't know anybody who owns as many as I do. I have a variety of colors that are not usually colors that I would wear. I only get them because they are SO confortable and are business-like enough to pass at my job with me having to wear a button up shirt everyday. I can't stand the un comforts of fashion. I still wear healed shoes, but only on days that I know I will be at my desk most of the day.

Yeah CARDIGANS!!!

Entertainment

Last night LOST was on. I used to be really interested in watching it. But I really feel like they aren't giving me anything to be interested in anymore. I know I'll keep watching it, but the anticipation is gone. I won't feel the need to be home to watch it like I used to. Which is actually a good thing, I suppose.

Here are the shows I watch regularly.

LOST
Amazing Race
The Office
My Name is Earl
Good Eats
Iron Chef America

I really like the Amazing Race. I think I like it for different reasons than most. Sure, the interaction between the teams can be fairly interesting. But the part that I like best is the traveling and seeing things in countries I most likely will never visit. In fact, I don't think I have ever been anywhere that they have on the show. (I have only been watching the show for about 2 years)

The Office is a GREAT show! The writing is suburb! I love the interaction between Michael & Dwight, Michael & Jim, Dwight & Jim, Jim & Pam, Pam & Angela, Dwight & Angela (when will their relationship come out!?!?!), Michael & the office.... Oh! It is so fabulous! It is so fabulous it has been developed for other countries!

Since I grew up in the sticks, I actually KNEW people who would grow up to be much like Earl and Joy. Plus, I love that Earl and Joy used to be husband and wife but now they are "friends" so to speak, as well as Darnell, her new husband. I think that is how it might work with most rednecks in trailer parks. That is how all the inbreeding happens. No one really cares who is with whom.

Good Eats is a great kookie show. Alton Brown is a scientific chef. He gets into the science of food. My favorite shows are when he has this "cow" that he can take apart, slice of meat by slice of meat. He even did 2 whole shows JUST about water! AMAZING!

Iron Chef America is also hosted by Alton Brown, although he just commentates. It is fun to see all the creative ideas that chefs come up with for random ingredients. If someone placed a Wild Boar or a Squid in front of me, I wouldn't have the foggiest idea of what to do next!

Three Beautiful Things

I just found this new blog that I am really enjoying ( http://threebeautifulthings.blogspot.com/ ). She is a woman in Britain who thinks of 3 things everyday that are beautiful. I really like this idea, because it reminds me that I want to keep a Thankful Journal, even though I never have.

So here are my 3 beautiful things for the day.

1) Coming home to a package on the doorstep after forgetting that you were supposed to be receiving something.

2) Having my husband throw his arm over me after my alarm goes off for the 3rd time so I can't get out of bed just yet.

3) Finding 2 amazing sweaters at a store when you went in looking for boots but couldn't find any good ones. Especially when fall weather just started.... Mmmmmmm......
